An alternative to long NHS waiting lists or private care

Lucy Douglas, GP and former President of the Primary Care Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine Society, has published an article looking into the S2 funding scheme as an option for patients on long waiting lists for planned NHS care.

It’s possible for eligible patients to get treatment funded by the NHS in the state healthcare system of EU/EEA countries. Germany and Switzerland have capacity in their state systems, and possibly others too.

The problem seems to be that very few patients or the clinicians treating them are aware of this option which means patients are struggling with untreated issues or trying to find the money to self-pay privately.
